In-person events = good for the soul!

Hey Reader

"I wanna be in the room where it happens, the room where it happens, the room where it happens." Yep, I'm singing "Hamilton."

Happy last week of January! First off, let’s talk about the cosmic vibes swirling around this week because, hello, it’s a big one. On Wednesday, January 29, we’re graced with a New Moon in Aquarius, and this New Moon also kicks off the Lunar New Year!

This year, it’s all about the Snake in the Chinese zodiac. Snakes are the ultimate symbol of transformation, shedding their skin and slithering into new versions of themselves. It’s magickal, a little scary (in a good way), and the perfect reminder to let go of what no longer serves us as we slide into who we’re meant to be. So, happy Lunar New Year! Let’s shed the old and make room for the fabulous new.

Now, let’s talk about networking. Yep, I said it. What happens in your body when you hear that word? Do your shoulders creep up to your ears? Does your stomach churn, or maybe you feel a flutter of butterflies (the anxious kind, not the cute ones)? I get it because I’ve been there.

But here’s the thing; it’s not about networking itself. It’s about being in the right room with the right people. And last week, I found myself in those rooms not once but twice!

First, I joined a friend as a guest at a BNI meeting (so fun!), and later in the week, I attended an in-person conference. In both spaces, I was surrounded by amazing, inspiring people. And guess what? Nobody was in a stiff suit or business armor. Even the folks dressed for work radiated vibes, not stuffiness.

Being physically present with others is such a game-changer. Don’t get me wrong, I love virtual connections (hello, Zoom coffee chats!), but being in the room is different. When you’re sitting at a table with a few other women, chatting about your dogs, kids, or travel plans (even if it’s just a weekend trip to Waco), you’re connecting on a human level.

These are the conversations you just don’t get in an online forum or even a virtual networking event. And when you build those authentic relationships, magickal things start to happen.

Case in point: At the conference, I wasn’t even trying to pitch myself. I was just being. But at the end of the day, someone I hadn’t even spoken to came up to me and said, “Hey, I hear you’re a Reiki master. I’m hosting a retreat in the Texas Hill Country and would love to talk to you about partnering on it.” How cool is that?!

Here’s the kicker: She wasn’t even at my table. Someone else in the room recommended me. Why? Because I showed up. I put myself in the room where it happens (cue the Hamilton soundtrack).

So, let me hit you with some truth bombs:

  1. You don’t need a polished elevator pitch to make an impression.
  2. Being around the right people can open doors you didn’t even know existed.
  3. Showing up authentically matters.

Now, you might be thinking, “Megan, this sounds great, but how do I find these rooms?” Don’t worry. I’ve got you. Here are a few ideas:

  • Join a book club. (I’m starting one soon that’s local, offline, and not business-focused. We’re just going to talk books, life, and probably drink cute mocktails.)
  • Check out Meetup.com for local events. From yoga classes to full-moon rituals, there’s something for everyone.
  • Attend conferences, retreats, or fun business mixers. You never know who you’ll meet.
  • Host or join a potluck. Food is the universal love language, right?

Here’s the thing: Getting in the room isn’t just about growing your business (though it will help with that). It’s also about enriching your life. When we connect with others, we create a support system: a community that lifts us up when times are tough and celebrates with us when things are great.

So, as we move into this transformative year of the Snake, I challenge you to find your room. Whether it’s a book club, a yoga class, or a local networking group, show up. Be you. Build relationships. And watch as the magic unfolds.

P.S. If you’re looking for more ways to connect or you want to see what I’m up to, pop over to check out the MBA Membership. And don’t forget to check out my latest YouTube videos for some bite-sized magic classes. Let’s co-create an amazing year together!

Hey Reader, A few years ago, I did something that I've only ever seen happen in movies. I threw a pencil in a board meeting... I remember exactly what I was doing when it happened. It was a Friday afternoon meeting on this never-ending book project at the software dev company I worked at. I was already tired. I was looking forward to the free yoga class I was attending after work - a perk of my freelance journalism gig. We'd gone over and over and OVER this damn book for months. And now the...

Is consistency stressing you out?

Hi Reader, How many posts, dancing Reels, and articles have you seen that talk about consistency in your marketing? If your feeds look anything like mine, I bet tons. But "just be consistent" is way easier said than done. Even for someone like me who lives and dies by her calendar and to-do list. Because sometimes you're just not feeling it. Ironically or not, I just wasn't feeling this email. You're reading this on Sunday (or after), but today's Friday for me, the day after the Lunar Eclipse...

Hey Reader Have I told you about my flight from hell? I was heading back from Las Vegas, and let me tell you, some things really should stay in Vegas. But I had no idea what was next. The first clue that this flight back to Dallas was not normal was when the pilot announced we had to make an emergency landing in Albequerque because someone was having a heart attack. After he safely disembarked with the paramedics, we were back on track. Making our way back to Dallas on a beautiful night....
