Are you optimizing too much?

Hi Reader,

I've been rewatching "Mad Men" lately and I'm struck by the themes that seep through the soapy drama. If you're unfamiliar, the show is about people in an advertising agency, and yes, since it's set in the 1960s, it's mostly an agency full of men.

What strikes me is how they approach advertising - and it truly reflects the real world.

Advertising works because it assumes that there's a problem that needs to be solved. We want something "better," whether it's our complexion, waistline, stress level, house, family, dog training, coffee maker... you get it.

Wellness advertising - whether it's for a device to track your steps, a book on time management, or a new meditation app - takes the position that there's something wrong with you. We call these "pain points" in marketing for a reason.

Even the word "healing" assumes that something needs to be fixed.

And it our current optimization-centric world, it's super easy to fall into the trap of seeking an end result that's really not realistic.

I am as pro-therapy, pro-medical intervention when you need it as I am pro-magic and pro-Reiki. AND there's something beautiful about being unfinished, about never reaching the "optimized" version of ourselves.

That's beautifully human.

This week on my podcast, I'm diving more into the darker side of wellness and self-help culture. I'm also sharing my thoughts on being more like Da Vinci and less like a machine.

You can listen to it here.

xoxo,
Megan

Hi Reader, I started my workday by casting a spell for myself. When was the last time you cast a spell or said a prayer for yourself? Today, mine was for self-love and self-worth. Because no matter how “good” we are at the mindset game, sometimes we need the reminder and, in my case, the reset. If I were to guess, I’d say you’re the type of person to be focused on what other people want and need. I feel pretty confident in this guess because I attract people who are driven by a purpose, who...

Hi Reader, If you’ve been feeling foggy, flat, or strangely numb lately, I want you to hear this clearly: You’re not failing at life. There's nothing wrong with you. There is seriously way too much going on for our nervous systems to keep up. This isn't an excuse to tune out of what's going on in the world, but it is an invitation to turn it down. As an example, the Ep. Files (you know the ones) - we know they're horrible. They're more horrible than any horror film created and produced. They...

Hi Reader, I burned out spectacularly in 2021. Like, the kind of burnout where you're crying in your car before a client call, wondering if you can just...disappear to Bali and sell coconuts on the beach instead. Except it happened on a random Sunday morning in line at a brunch spot and I made a scene. (Spoiler: I did not move to Bali. I stayed in Texas and sold business strategy instead. But I thought about beaches A LOT.) Here's what not enough people say about burnout: it's not a personal...
